Why I love alcohol

Posted in Personal mumbo jumbo on February 19, 2010 by thefyrdman

Far too often do I hear nonsense about alcohol from government, NGO’s, soap operas who I am becoming more and convinced are being sponsered by anti-drinking groups etc.  The tragic thing about it is that, even though it is mostly exaggerated bullshit, because the lie is now so big and widespread it is settling into peoples minds.  And every time I feel myself actually considering the opinions of these puritanical fuckwits I stop myself and read this comment from Mr. Eugenides:

Drinking with friends is one of life’s small pleasures. No, let’s change it up; it’s one of life’s biggest pleasures. How many memories are burned on the brain – albeit fuzzily – from boozy student nights out, when tomorrow morning’s lectures could be skipped with impunity and the whole world was there for the taking? How many lifelong friendships forged over pints on lazy summer evenings? How many of your friends have met, taken a fancy to and fallen in love with life partners with the aid of a shot of Dutch courage to loosen the inhibitions or a glass of wine to lubricate the tongue? How many of us and our children, to say nothing of geniuses yet to be born, owe our very places on this earth, and some of the fondest times of our lives, to the joyous, self-actualising, life-affirming, complex, subtle, almost magical force that is alcohol?

So seeing as it’s Friday, I’d like to raise a toast to that most wonderful of substances and finest of life’s little pleasures, alcohol.

Cheers.

The Libertarian Party UK

Posted in Personal mumbo jumbo, shameless plug on February 4, 2010 by thefyrdman

Well I’m now officially a member of the Libertarian Party UK

So far I’ve been a member of the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives and now the LPUK.  Some people might see this as somehow disloyal or flakey.  Those people are either ignorant or simply tribal idiots.  As a person goes through life they should always consider consider where they stand in relation to their principles.  If they don’t match, it’s time to move.  And as we learn new things and gain greater understanding, it’s inevitable we will from time to time shift our positions.  I joined the Lib Dem’s for tactical reasons – I wanted to support PR at the time.  I joined the Tories because I was/am desperate to get shot of this car crash of a government.  Now with a Tory win being largely inevitable, I don’t need to donate to the spineless, directionless Blair wanabe that is Cameron.

Anyone who is interested in having a free Britain (which should be every decent human being) should take a look at this website and consider giving them their support.

Also, the leader of the LPUK is Chris Mounsey, perhaps better known by his website, The Devils Kitchen.  If anyone has read his stuff, just imagine him in Parliament…

Fucking snow

It’s snowing.  Again.

I hate fucking snow.

Especially now I’ve been in the South too long and I’m slowly starting to take on the shandy-drinkers characteristic of shivering at the slightest breeze.

It’s all about me

Hello world, and welcome to the rantings of this crazed northerner.

I’ve held off writing a blog for a long time as it smacks as thinking your own thoughts are so witty and interesting that the rest of humanity will give a flying fuck.  However, in the interests of my dear wife I have decided to write up my rantings here.   I figure if I can get it off my chest here rather than telling her during Gossip Girl we’ll make it to our first anniversary later this year.

So, it would be rude of me not to introduce myself a little.  I’m a Northern ex-pat living in the West Midlands these days and working for a bank I’d rather not name in case my musings are one day held against me.  I’m a libertarian but it took me a journey starting at LibDem’s via the Communist Party of Great Britain before hitting Hayek’s Road to Serfdom finally settled where I lie politically.  I’d like to think I was driven throughout all those shifts by a desire for a free society consistently, but new knowledge, debates and growing common sense gradually told me collectivist nonsense just cannot achieve any meaningful freedom.  In truth though, it was as much a growing sense of wanting everyone else to fuck off and let me plot my own course.

Besides my politics, my other passions are food, alcohol and my wife.  Quit vomitting, we’re still newlyweds.

Finally, though I expect this blog to be mostly about politics I will no doubt stray elsewhere, so bear with me…
