Quote of the Day

Trying to play catch up by doing lots of posts today, clearly.  Today’s quote from one of my favourite authors, Ayn Rand.

I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

These words are spoken by the character John Galt.

What I love about this quote is that it, for me, sums up liberty so definitively and concisely.  It does not preclude the desire or will to help others, or receive help, but it does deny the right of others to claim we must help them.  Where we help by choice, we are morally good.  Where we help by force or blackmail, we are amoral in our actions, and the instigator becomes wicked.  It also neatly shows the respect required between sovereign individuals, to ask no more of someone else than we would ask of them.
